Job Title Definition:
An Associate Athletic Director provides unit and University-wide leadership that is essential to supporting the daily functions and business processes associated with effectively managing Intercollegiate Athletics; supervisory roles are prevalent and reporting lines are typically to the Director of Athletics; results of decisions may create a major impact on University-wide operations and/or finances; these positions typically provide supervision and direction to employees and impacts staff development, human resource actions, and organizational change; internal contacts range from various departmental staff to Presidents, Provosts and Trustees; external contacts range from the general public, visitors, and service vendors to community, government and business leaders; responsibilities will vary but may include: analysis; strategic planning; program creation and implementation; financial management; hiring, evaluating and holding employees accountable; safety and security; contract negotiations; compliance with set standards; oversee and evaluate program equity to ensure Title IX compliance; and fundraising. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
Leadership
  • Provide senior-level management in planning, negotiating, developing and/or implementing unit or University-wide programs and services, and relay importance of unit’s mission and goals to all employees
  • Contribute to unit diversity environment by instructing staff on the overall value of positive diversity in the workplace, and lead by example
  • Develop internal relationships to ensure University’s interest and expectations are met and contribute to the cultivation of relationships with alumni and donors
  • Hire, supervise train and evaluate associated staffs, coaches, and/or student employees, and demonstrate sound expertise for the mentoring of employees

Budget Management

  • Manage budgets, develop related proposals, assist in long-range projections, and demonstrate fiscal responsibility, while instructing lower level management on fiscal policy
  • Oversee and evaluate spending and expenditures for different areas of the department, hold individuals accountable for their spending, and recommend changes as needed

Communication

  • Provide information, for assigned area, based on Department, University, Conference and NCAA guidelines
  • May speak on behalf of unit for areas of responsibility and discuss common issues with peers from different units within the University
  • Represent the department at various events and serve on professional committees and task-forces
  • Represent the University on NCAA Committees and Big Ten Conference governing bodies/committees
  • Interact with and act as the primary liaison with lower-level University management, and other various internal and external constituents
  • May interact with various groups and when appropriate respond to media or public inquiry

Other Work Activities

  • Participate in the establishment of unit or University-wide written plans, policies and procedures
  • Negotiate corporate contracts, manage branding and coordinate information distribution to media outlets
  • Oversee athletic facilities and long-range planning for practice and competition venues
  • Ensure compliance and institutional control by following all NCAA, Conference, University, and Federal (which includes Title IX) regulations, and embracing the highest standard of integrity and ethical behavior
  • Provide safe and secure environments for faculty, staff and students to participate in sponsored athletic programs and for fans and other public to attend related events

  • Provide senior-level management in planning, negotiating, developing and/or implementing unit or University-wide programs and services and assume leadership roles on major University, Big Ten Conference and NCAA Government committees
  • Develop strategic plans for Athletics; ensure that the vision, mission and goals are integrated into all areas of department; and demonstrate the ability to facilitate “buy in” by all department employees
