Job Title Definition:
The Compliance Specialist develops, implements, and oversees programs to ensure compliance with required protocols, regulations, and laws such as research protections and integrity, conflicts of interest, contract compliance and grant compliance; reviews federal and state requirements, researches protocols, and other government, local, and University mandates to ensure that the University and its employees are in compliance with these regulations; updates procedures and policies to ensure fulfillment of current and new regulatory obligations; develops, conducts, and maintains mandated training and education programs; provides guidance and recommendations to administration, faculty, staff, and students in area of expertise; develops and maintains records for regulatory compliance; initiates investigations and/or routine monitoring for program compliance and/or in response to reports of non-compliance or concerns; responds to notifications of unsafe conditions, contract non-compliance, or other discrepancies and reports findings to compliance committees, administration, federal agencies and/or other mandated entities, as required and/or appropriate; reviews new regulations to determine impact on the institution and applicable faculty, staff, or students; consults and interacts with other institutions, federal agencies and other entities outside of the University to discuss best practices, compliance concerns, or regulation interpretation; serves on University, professional, and/or governmental advisory groups, committees or organizations; may supervise other staff positions. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined categories.

Typical Work Duties
  • Compile records for incoming research proposals, and prepare reports and agendas for new research submissions, problem reports and modification requests for ongoing research
  • Maintain computerized database records, official files for all research, and statistical records
  • Arrange and attend review meetings, compile all review materials and documentation, and ensure that regulatory requirements are met
  • Compose documentation regarding the evaluation of proposed and ongoing research to demonstrate the institution’s compliance with federal regulatory requirements
  • May serve as a liaison between faculty and research staff and the office for protection of research subjects regarding submission requirements
  • Assist with budgetary responsibilities to coordinate purchases and travel arrangements
  • Assist in managing membership records, compliance with disclosure and training requirements, and completion of federal registrations
  • Assist in project activities, including recognition functions and annual new member orientations
  • Assist with preparation and publication of the institutional research newsletter
