Museum Specialist - Part Time

JOB TITLE DEFINITION:  

The Museum Specialist facilitates the management and documentation of museum collections and/or development and presentation of exhibitions; responsibilities may include collections management, care, and registration of permanent collections and acquisitions and the development, design, preparation, and installation of permanent collection displays and temporary exhibitions. 

SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:  

  • Assist in design, preparation, and maintenance of collections storage areas, exhibition spaces, or galleries in accordance with museum and curatorial standards
  • Assist with cataloging activities such as collections processing and maintaining/updating collection databases and records
  • Contribute to exhibition concepts, design plans, and identify exhibition furniture and environmental conditions for display of artifacts, artwork, and objects in accordance with established museum standards
  • Assist with research and production of exhibition documents and print materials
  • Coordinate planning and specifications for scheduled exhibitions; organize and assist with logistics such as shipping, handling, and insurance of exhibition pieces in accordance with curatorial guidelines and standards
  • Provide guidance and responses to customer inquires; redirect or escalate when necessary
  • Provide routine program logistics/maintain requirements or activities to ensure quality of programs
  • May help to develop and organize new collections aimed at expanding and/or improving facilities
  • May conduct research for potential acquisitions to inform buying and pricing decisions
  • May communicate with artists, museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions to secure exhibitions
