Job Title Definition:
The Engineering Lab Manager manages the fabrication of precision model test hardware; supervises the machinists, tool makers and technicians; oversees cost center, approves budget expenditures, develops cost center reports, and initiates the procurement of new equipment; reviews work requests with private investigators and/or engineers and recommends design or material changes; prepares cost and time quotations; prioritizes and directs the staff schedule and equipment to meet deadlines; recommends the use of new technologies and equipment as applied to the fabrication process; ensures appropriate skills are developed and maintained by machinists and technicians to meet highly technical demands of research and development teams; leads communication for team goals, and develops practices with a strategic plan to provide exemplary product fabrication. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Review work requests with originators, faculty, students, or staff; recommend design or material changes; prepare cost and time estimates
  • Provide computer aided design consultation services, and monitor the fabrication, assembly, and testing of equipment/materials used in various research projects
  • Provide assistance and instruction to faculty, machinists, mechanics, students, or staff in devising and/or using special equipment/computer set-ups
  • May design and set-up classroom laboratory for instructional purposes
  • May determine work to be sent to outside vendors; coordinate vendor arrangements and monitor progress or work/projects
  • Determine future equipment needs and prepare justification for purchase; order materials and tooling; maintain records/budgets
  • Schedule staff and equipment to meet deadlines; prepare reports on status of project/work
  • Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate assigned staff

  • Develop plans and project needs; authorize purchase of all supplies and equipment; maintain cost structure for billing customer projects; oversee preparation of all shop records
  • Develop work description, cost estimates and final designs working with appropriate personnel
  • Provide assistance and instruction to faculty, machinists, mechanics, students, or staff in devising and/or using special equipment/computer set-ups
  • Ensure compliance of product with respect to design and ensure tolerances are maintained
