Job Title Definition:
The Engineering Project Manager applies project management practices and processes to various University work units and projects; functions may include meeting with a diverse array of project stakeholders, including funding sponsors, project engineers, and technical tradesmen, to brief project planning, budgeting, and resource management efforts, and the status of project execution and deliverables to facilitate the identification of existing and/or new work needed to accomplish the project goals and objectives; facilitates and communicates project goals and objectives, including cost, schedule, resource management, technical performance, and deliverables and must be an excellent communicator; documents will be produced at each stage of the project and the Project Manager is responsible to ensure that they conform to regulatory, statutory, sponsor and stakeholder requirements. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Interact regularly with project sponsors and stakeholders, project and program teams for work unit and/or organization-wide, multi-year programs
  • Develop appropriate project management strategies for implementing requirements across a broad range of tasks and initiatives
  • Conduct project management activities such as communicating with principle investigators, resource managers, project engineers, technical tradesmen, etc. in order to track project cost and schedule milestones, maintain quality assurance processes, and keep the focus on delivering project commitments
  • Facilitate and lead the creation of task/project budgets, work breakdowns, rough order estimates, task prioritization, and integration plans with Principal Investigators and program managers
  • Research and recommend project management policies, principles, and practices
  • Institute effective project specific processes and procedures
  • Coordinate, resolve, or assist in resolution of conflicts and other issues within and between project and program teams and recommend/provide solutions
  • Prepare reports and other associated project and/or program documentation
  • May serve as liaison with other work units, programs and various other organizations/groups to disseminate appropriate information
  • Provide schedule deadlines and budget constraints for design, assembly and procedural inputs for new and/or standard facility and test equipment in collaboration with work unit engineering faculty and staff and Operations staff
  • Evaluate schedule and cost constraints and operational and performance specifications for the selection of project materials and components
  • Plan, schedule, perform and/or review inspections and tests of parts and equipment as required for project operations and completion
  • Identify, assess, and plan efforts to address system faults and affect accepted adjustments and repair in collaboration with work unit engineering faculty and staff and Operations staff
  • Facilitate and enable collaborations between project engineers and senior/experienced/qualified technical tradesmen to gather, compile, process, and/or archive test data in the laboratory or in the field
  • Recommend, plan, and schedule operational training to prepare for and execute project tasks
  • Facilitate, and participate in the planning process and provide input for decisions effecting facility operations, maintenance and repair, and technical task/project execution
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators, project engineers and technical tradesmen to research and document emerging best practices, technologies and vendors for project execution

  • Coordinate the work of lower level project managers, task leaders and/or senior technical tradesmen, including managing professional development and performance plans, salary and/or employee relations issues
