Job Title Definition:
The Human Resources Generalist oversees a wide variety of human resources activities in the areas of compensation, benefits, talent acquisition, retention, employee/labor relations, immigration, training and/or development for a specific unit(s); initiates and responds to inquiries concerning pay, benefits, staffing, and general human resources issues/concerns; interprets and applies human resources policies in complex situations; investigates employee relations issues and recommends resolution alternatives; approves human resources transactions; interacts with various internal and external departments to research and resolve concerns; creates and revises Human Resources procedures, and programs, leading unit and/or cross-functional teams as appropriate. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Initiate and/or respond to inquiries concerning human resources issues
  • Provide guidance to employees and management on human resources policies and procedures
  • Resolve general employee issues and concerns (e.g., work schedules, job review procedures, pay discrepancies, etc.); obtain information from higher-level human resources staff and/or refer as appropriate
  • Assist in the coordination of human resources functions within unit such as performance evaluation, staffing, training, etc.
  • Assist in coordination of staffing process including identification of search committee members, development of appropriate interview questions, and identification of appropriate candidate evaluation methodology
  • Process and/or approve human resources/payroll transactions
  • Assist with the development of unit-specific human resources policies, procedures, and programs
  • Create and maintain databases and queries; generate reports from various human resources tables/databases
  • Promote diversity and inclusion through human resources programs and activities

Typical Work Duties
  • Provide advice and guidance on all phases of human resources activities, policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and programs
  • Serve as a consultant to people managers and unit leadership on performance management, talent acquisition, talent management, employee engagement, and workforce planning
  • Provide input to the HR planning process to align with unit/university strategic plan; support process improvement initiatives
  • Support the Human Resources Strategic Partner (HRSP) with the development and coordination of human resources programs based on unit objectives
  • Develop, present, and/or facilitate a variety of training programs for employees within unit
  • Develop unit-specific human resources procedures and programs
  • Provide guidance to management on staffing process and coordinate the interview process including providing direction to search committee, developing appropriate interview questions, identifying appropriate candidate evaluation methodology, and finalizing offers
  • Represent the unit on University-wide committees and task forces; lead teams working on unit-specific issues
  • Resolve complex and unusual issues and employee concerns; provide management and employee coaching and counseling
  • Assist in implementation of University-wide initiatives within unit such as federal or state legal requirements
  • Serve as liaison with other units, divisions, and organizations
  • Partner with other senior HR resources to work on organization design initiatives
  • Research and gather background information; prepare reports, analyses, and recommendations
  • Provide input in budget management and strategic planning initiatives
  • Promote diversity and inclusion through human resources programs and activities
