Job Title Definition:
The Information Technology Generalist is responsible for implementing and/or managing complex systems and solutions via integration of a broad spectrum of individual hardware and software technologies; performs administrative and technical procedures on information systems and maintains documentation;  covers multiple functional areas (systems design, systems and network administration, programmer/analyst, information technology support, and Information Technology consulting). Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties

Performs administrative and technical procedures on information systems and maintains documentation that covers multiple functional areas:

Infrastructure

  • Evaluate equipment, components, and software for use in moderately complex information technology systems and solutions; interface with vendors as necessary
  • Develop design requirements and prototypes
  • Configure and maintain network devices, server hardware, operating systems, and associated services
  • Participate in developing plans, schedules, and requirements for the deployment and lifecycle of systems
  • Ensure security of network assets

Applications

  • Design, develop, test, debug, install, implement, modify, and support new or existing applications software in accordance with area standard practices
  • Work with users to analyze their requirements
  • Maintain familiarity with installed software standards and procedures and provide technical guidance to other staff

User Success

  • Provide technical support of workstations and laptops and technical guidance for assigned customer base
  • Facilitate user access to local, unit and University information technology resources
  • Implement security policies and protocols of the department
  • Assist with user account administration, file rights management and backup/recovery policies and procedures
  • Assist in the development of appropriate technology solutions for information delivery and/or learning environments

  • Evaluate potential equipment, components, and software for new solutions in moderately complex or complex information systems; interface with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems
  • Develop design requirements and prototypes as needed; may help other units define and design solutions for their environments
  • Participate in and provide information for the strategic planning process at the unit level
  • Develop and maintain custom programs and scripts to aid in systems management
  • Provide oversight for the configuration, maintenance, and security of network devices, server hardware, operating systems, and associated services
  • Manage the development of plans, schedules, and requirements for the deployment and lifecycle of systems
  • Conduct regular reviews of security levels delivered against policy goals
  • Interface with University organizations to resolve service-related issues
