Job Title Definition:
Directs or assists with directing activities of preschool, child care center, kindergarten, or other child development facility to provide instruction and care for children; responsibilities include preparing and submitting facility budget to administration for approval, authorizing the purchase of instructional materials and teaching aids, such as books, toys, and games designed to stimulate learning; selects, hires, supervises, and evaluates staff; confers with parents regarding facility activities, policies, and enrollment procedures; engages with teachers, parents, and staff about children’s social and emotional learning experiences and behaviors; recommends methods and strategies to encourage optimum learning experiences; reviews and evaluates facility activities to ensure conformance to national, state and local regulations; approves menu plans and food purchases; in the event of injury or illness, arranges for medical attention (or special health care arrangements) for ill or injured children in accordance and in consultation with parental instructions, family and medical advisors; may perform classroom teaching duties during absence of regular teacher; may engage in community ECE activities and committees, and University community; works with community agencies to obtain and deliver appropriate services to children and families with special needs; may obtain grants and contracts. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • May direct the administration of a small program or center, enrollment from 0 to 45 children; size of center is defined by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania guidelines

  • May oversee multiple sites; may be responsible for the development and maintenance of child care activities at other campus locations
  • Direct all aspects of the operation of a child care center including supervision of staff; development and implementation of policies, procedures, and programming; and management of budget
