These functions will include the systematic management of all administrative and operational needs associated with program development and implementation and/or the maintenance of facilities, fields and equipment; management and organization of human resource responsibilities; comprehensive development of financial plans and budget(s) in accordance with University budgetary guidelines; adherence to established safety policies and procedures and formulation and/or adaptation of new policies when appropriate; and the development and facilitation of promotional strategies through the use of all types of media and technology.
Job Title Definition:
The Manager of Athletic Services oversees the supervision of, and provides leadership to, the employees of athletic (recreational, athletic training, and strength training and conditioning) facilities and programs in order to sustain Departmental mission and achieve goals; fosters the growth and development of employees through selection, training, supervision, support, and evaluation of full and part-time union and non-union employees and responsible for maintaining a positive work environment; collaborates with Risk Management to ensure adherence to University and Athletic safety policies and procedures and develops new policies as the needs of facilities and programs change at a University level or in accordance with national governing bodies; oversees all aspects of Athletic compliance including the maintenance of appropriate certifications, familiarity with regulations, maintaining documentation, keeping current with requirements, and ensuring that employees conform to appropriate practices; develops a budget(s) and/or establishes reporting systems, and may act as a budget administrator; creates expenditure proposals, approves purchases, and seeks new sources of revenue; researches and recommends capital improvements and serves on athletic/recreational facility development and/or other University committees; champions project development, new ventures, and innovative endeavors for the benefit of the organization; projects equipment needs and may approve substantial alterations to current and future equipment inventory; establishes a vision for the direction of athletic/recreational activities and programs and the subsequent marketing plan(s) and may set timelines and budgets for advertising and may approve media materials; facilitates public speaking events and may represent the Athletic Department when dealing with independent contractors, law enforcement, and/or other outside agencies; duties associated with coaching a team including any business and/or logistical operations necessary for the team’s existence and success. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

  • Recommend new or replacement equipment for athletic programs and/or facilities based on multiple or large department and customer needs; provide information regarding equipment needs of the department based upon project plans and front line needs
  • Recommend expenditures and approve daily purchases in support of athletic programs and/or facilities
  • Anticipate potential problems and recommend possible solutions to supervisor; use first hand operational knowledge to focus on meeting tactical goals or to contribute to strategic planning
  • Serve as a liaison between senior management and lower level supervisors; provide requested information and reports
  • Seek continuous improvement regarding daily operations; identify opportunities and recommend actions; coach employees to incorporate new athletic program and facility ideas
