Job Title Definition:
The Athletic Trainer provides athletic training services to physically active individuals within the University in accordance with Pennsylvania Practice Act, established by the State Board of Medicine within the Department of the State; these services are defined as: The management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person, with the direction of a licensed physician; the term includes the rendering of emergency care, development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative and supportive devices for the physically active person; the term also includes the assessment, management, treatment; rehabilitation and reconditioning of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a certified athletic trainer; the term also includes the use of modalities such as: mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound, massage and the use of therapeutic exercise, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Dealing primarily with low risk activities, assist in the coverage of athletic team events and provide athletic training services to physically active individuals within the University; assist in maintaining and facilitating all aspects of health care including but not limited to: physician referrals; medical appointments; physicals, medical insurance; etc.
  • Maintain proper medical records in accordance with all governing guidelines (i.e. HIPPA)
  • Communicate health information (including participation status) with: players, coaches, physicians, etc.
  • Adhere to existing University and appropriate external regulatory agency safety policies and procedures; activate Emergency Action Plan as appropriate; complete appropriate paperwork including but not limited to incident or injury reports for departmental accountability
  • Assist in the implementation of comprehensive injury prevention and performance enhancement programs for intercollegiate athletic teams
  • Assist in the education and supervision of Student Athletic Trainers
  • Serve as an educational resource for matters related to Sports Medicine and Athletic Training for personnel internal to and affiliated with the University
  • Stay current on research and trends in the field of Athletic Training and look to expand working knowledge; earn and maintain appropriate professional certifications

Typical Work Duties
  • Provide medical coverage including:
    • In collaboration with team physicians, provide Athletic Training Services to optimize activity and participation of student athletes. These services encompass the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities as defined by the NATA.
    • In conjunction with the team physician, determine the athletes’ readiness to participate including pre-participation and post-injury/illness return
    • Adhere to existing University and appropriate external regulatory agency safety policies and procedures; activate Emergency Action Plan as appropriate.
    • Recognition, evaluation and immediate treatment of athletic injuries/illness.
    • Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries
    • Recognize and monitor psychosocial issues student athletes may be experiencing and refer to appropriate professional for intervention if appropriate.
    • Educate and advise student athletes to help achieve good nutritional habits. Instruct and monitor university policy on nutritional supplements. Work in collaboration with Sports Nutritionist to identify and assist student athletes with specific nutritional needs.
    • Perform all aspects of health care administration pertinent to student athletes including: developing and maintaining medical records; scheduling health care appointments; ensure open lines of collaboration and communications with health care professionals associated with athletics.
    • Complete professional development to maintain and improve knowledge and skills.
  • Communicate health information (including participation status) with: players, coaches, physicians, etc.

Typical Work Duties
  • Perform all duties defined in Athletic Trainer Level 2
  • Ensure communication with Sports Medicine, student health, coaches, administration and support staff
  • Coordinate and oversee appropriate treatment and rehabilitative protocols
  • Supervise strict adherence of Standing Orders
  • Research current methods of treatment and oversee adherence for required certifications and staff continuing education
  • Oversee and coordinate student athlete entrance and exit physicals
  • Coordinate scheduling of auxiliary services (e.g. Nutritionist, Physical Therapy, Alter G, etc.)
  • Distribute and monitor usage of supplementary medical equipment (e.g. carts, CPM, etc.)

  • Supervise the maintenance and care of all aspects of student athlete health care, including but not limited to physician referrals, medical appointments, physicals, medical insurance.
  • Oversee the maintenance of medical records in accordance with all governing guidelines Act as a liaison with team physicians, student health, administration and support staff
  • Adhere to existing University and appropriate external regulatory agency safety policies and procedures Activate Emergency Action Plan as appropriate; develop and oversee implementation of enhancements to existing safety, facility and equipment policies and procedures as appropriate; review and analyze reports, suggest and/or implement appropriate action
  • Supervise inventory and ordering of expendable goods
  • Research and coordinate purchase and improvement of capital equipment
  • Monitor the condition of facility and coordinate with other departments on the maintenance, repairs and alterations of Athletic Training facilities
