Job Title Definition:
The Systems Design Specialist provides specific design specifications for operating, network, or infrastructure systems; evaluates, recommends, plans and designs solutions; includes infrastructure, hardware, software systems, and middleware with the objective of seamless integration; maintains familiarity with standard security, privacy, communications, and systems protocols. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Meet with stakeholders to determine technical requirements for new services or service improvements
  • Develop design requirements for the deployment of systems
  • Develop prototypes of appropriate infrastructure, hardware, and associated systems
  • Evaluate potential equipment, components, and software
  • Integrate hardware and software components into target systems
  • Develop design requirements for new and upgraded solutions
  • Develop and execute test plans to ensure system functionality
  • Interface with University organizations to resolve service-related issues
  • Participate in the design of and implement business continuity and disaster recovery strategies
  • Establish service management processes, procedures, and workflow
  • Work with Office of Information Security to monitor threats, alerts, and security vulnerabilities for installed systems; implement response plan for various types of threats and attacks; collect and analyze information regarding security breaches and anomalies
  • Maintain current and correct documentation
  • Become familiar with project management disciplines
  • Develop effective processes and procedures
  • Interface with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems

  • Provide expertise in the design and operation of infrastructure to support the operation and needs of systems and applications
  • Collaborate with unit leaders and stakeholders to analyze business needs to define an architectural strategy
  • Provide strategy to design and build infrastructure plans based on business requirements
  • Conduct research on emerging technologies; recommend new technology solutions or create solutions to existing systems to increase performance, efficiency, reliability, and security
  • Oversee the implementation of new system technologies
  • Develop processes and practices for design, maintenance, and operations of systems to ensure consistent and reliable operation to meet business needs

  • Serve as the technical architect responsible for developing and maintaining technical architecture standards, principles, and processes
  • Establish a technical architecture discipline and lead enterprise implementation and collaboration
  • Lead and/or contribute to the development of technical architecture strategies for a broad range of core infrastructure and services
