Job Title Definition:
The Risk Management Specialist reviews and recommends overall risk management strategies, as well as evaluates and implements commercial insurance products to minimize costs while managing the risk of major claims to the University; prepares analyses of risk coverage and insurance strategies including self insurance, commercial insurance and/or a combination of deductibles and umbrella coverage for areas such as general liability, automobile, property, art, athletic, and Directors’ and Officers’ coverage; evaluates claims and recommends resolutions that minimize the cost and negative implications to the University; designs and administers special insurance programs for areas such as child care, products, pollution, liquor, facilities usage and medical malpractice; evaluates and negotiates insurance contracts; represents the University in hearings and legal proceedings associated with claims either filed against or on behalf of the University. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Investigate incidents and/or complaints determining whether claims need to be filed with appropriate insurance carriers
  • Communicate with a variety of claimants, employees, legal representatives and insurance brokers/representatives to coordinate the review and processing of claims
  • Coordinate claims processing to minimize legal and monetary impacts to the University
  • Monitor pending claims including general liability, automobile, property, art, athletic, and Directors’ and Officers’
  • Assist in conducting detailed investigations of large risk claims at various University locations
  • Initiate claims, with management approval, against other parties responsible for damages to University property
  • Assist University legal representatives in preparing for legal actions filed against or on behalf of the University
  • May supervise and train assigned support staff

Typical Work Duties
  • Assist in evaluation of appropriate insurance methodology (self-insurance, commercial insurance, deductibles, etc.) for specific risks
  • Assist in the evaluation of commercial insurance and, as appropriate, renew existing policies or assist in the development of specifications for bids
  • Negotiate insurance policies; develop/construct agreements and contracts, in conjunction with University attorneys
  • Assist in the design and administration of special insurance programs for risks such as child care programs, products, pollution, liquor, Directors’ and Officers’ and medical malpractice
  • Train and advise University personnel on risk reduction, insurance coverage, insurance claims, development of underwriting data, overall insurance programs and mandatory areas of compliance
  • Investigate complex or potentially high cost incidents and/or complaints determining whether claims need to be filed with appropriate insurance carriers
  • Communicate with a variety of claimants, employees, legal representatives and insurance brokers/representatives to coordinate the review and processing of claims
