Job Title Definition:

Safety & Security Specialists implement programs, plans, policies, and procedures in the interest of University safety, security and risk reduction; function across multiple specialty areas, including but not limited to emergency planning, behavioral threat, and security; ensure the safety and security of the campus community; respond to notifications of unsafe conditions or threats; conduct inspections and audits to maintain preparedness; provide education and training to the University community; ensure established procedures are followed by employees, students, and visitors; contribute to the development of emergency and business continuity plans; collaborate with external governmental and local agencies. Duties are performed at various levels within the defined title.

Typical Work Duties
  • Assist in the implementation of programs, plans, and procedures in the interest of University safety and security
  • Respond to questions and provide general information
  • Respond to requests for assistance; take appropriate action
  • Ensure established procedures are followed for employees, students, and visitors
  • Conduct preliminary investigation of safety and security incidents and determine if escalation is required
  • Submit reports of daily activities and irregularities
  • Assist with self-inspections, audits, and security inspections
  • Collect and maintain documentation and records
  • Assess existing safety and security measures and make recommendations for changes
  • Assist with performing administrative and record keeping functions including but not limited to keys, electronic access, etc.
  • May monitor camera feeds from various facilities
  • May train, monitor, and arrange APSO shift activities according to staff availability and schedules

  • Lead and coordinate teams responsible for emergency management, risk assessment, and/or security
  • Serve as the lead subject matter expert for a division; develop strategies for complex University-wide issues
  • Fulfill leadership role in the absence of management, including advising on strategic decisions
  • Establish audit requirements; lead investigations and monitoring of program; evaluate effectiveness
  • Analyze and interpret trends and regulatory changes; facilitate the development of appropriate University strategy
