JOB TITLE DEFINITION:  

The Counselor specializes in promoting personal, academic, and social growth through personal/group counseling, career exploration, and support services. The counselor provides services to undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, and Penn State Employees, and serves as a resource to all academic and student service units. 

SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:  

  • Provide professional counseling for students on academic, career, personal, and financial matters 
  • Facilitate the development of career-life plans through the exploration of career identity and career possibilities, the formulation of career development goals, and the development of skills and strategies for achieving career/vocational goals 
  • Administer and interpret a broad range of career assessment or placement testing instruments 
  • Review academic progress with individuals and may assist with academic planning 
  • Maintain case notes that track client progress, assessments results and counseling goals, ensuring confidentiality 
  • Assist in the development and delivery of career/life education and outreach and service programs 
  • Provide professional referral services for any student requiring extended treatment for social, personal, or psychiatric problems 
  • Plan, implement, assess, and evaluate specific programming or counseling area, educational program, or academic support service 
  • Provide liaison and consultative services to faculty, staff, and student organizations 
  • Perform special projects that are closely aligned with training/coursework in academic departments 

REQUIREMENTS: May require Master’s Degree or higher in counselor education, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or related discipline. May require completed practicum in Counseling (Counseling Skills and Techniques).
