JOB TITLE DEFINITION:  

Athletic/Recreation Services Support positions provide operational, instructional, and programmatic support for athletics and campus recreation activities; assist in the coordination and supervision of recreational facilities, programs, and events while promoting a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for participants. Incumbents may lead recreational activities, support fitness and wellness programming, assist with athletic event operations, and ensure compliance with facility policies and safety standards. Note: positions such as ushers, ticket operations, parking attendants, guest relations, and physical event set-up should not be classified within this title.

SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:  

  • Support daily operations of athletic or recreational facilities, fitness centers, aquatic areas, and specialty spaces (e.g., climbing walls)
  • Monitor participant activity to ensure safe and appropriate use of equipment and facilities
  • Enforce facility policies, procedures, and standards of conduct
  • Track facility usage and report maintenance issues, safety concerns, or equipment damage
  • Facilitate and lead recreational activities, intramural sports, and wellness programs
  • Assist in planning and delivering activities based on participant needs and interests
  • Provide instruction for fitness classes or personal training sessions (as qualified)
  • Offer guidance on exercise techniques, skill development, and wellness practices
  • Monitor participant progress and provide feedback to enhance performance and safety
  • Maintain a safe environment by proactively identifying risks and addressing concerns
  • Administer basic first aid and respond to emergencies in accordance with established protocols; coordinate with emergency personnel when necessary
  • Promote proper equipment usage and adherence to safety guidelines
  • Assist with game day operations, including scoreboard operation, timing, and statistics tracking
  • Officiate intramural or recreational sporting events as assigned, ensuring fair play and rule enforcement
  • Contribute to participant engagement and retention efforts within recreation programs
  • Support outreach initiatives and assist with promoting recreational opportunities
  • Provide excellent customer service and foster a welcoming environment for all participants
