JOB TITLE DEFINITION:
Support laboratory classes and research projects regarding equipment usage, maintenance, and repair as well as routine data collection. Technicians may support work in a variety of disciplines including but not limited to animal science, biology, chemistry, engineering, materials, and physics. Positions with this job title typically have skilled trades experience.
SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Assemble and disassemble laboratory experiments and demonstrations per faculty instruction; assure that materials and equipment are present and ready for use in laboratory or classroom; remove, clean, and properly store equipment after use
- Demonstrate the proper use of various laboratory equipment and apparatus
- Promote and maintain safe practices; may monitor students to ensure they are working safely; correct unsafe conditions and report violations to supervisor
- Perform preventative maintenance, service, and calibration of laboratory and/or shop equipment
- Assist faculty and students in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of specialized laboratory equipment, labs, and projects
- Locate failures and malfunctions in electronic equipment and perform routine repairs
- Maintain chemical use records and submit monthly reports to Safety Office; arrange with Safety Office for proper disposal of old or potentially dangerous chemicals no longer useable, or which are regulated by state and federal laws
- Order and maintain stock of spare parts and materials for equipment maintenance and repairs; obtain approvals for orders
- Perform site and safety checks on building areas and equipment following prescribed procedures; report issues to supervisor or the appropriate personnel
