JOB TITLE DEFINITION:
Lifeguards prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring at University aquatic facilities; ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors; communicate and enforce pool rules and policies.
SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Monitor swimming areas to safeguard patrons
- Observe activities in assigned areas to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions
- Warn patrons of inclement weather and unsafe areas
- Enforce rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; support daily operations
- Adhere to safe and appropriate use of all equipment and modalities within established guidelines
- Rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment
- Examine injured persons and administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training, medical supplies, and equipment
- Contact emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury
- Inspect recreational equipment for safety hazards, maintenance problems, damage, and wear; notify supervisor of unusual conditions
- Greet students/visitors, provide information and/or refer as appropriate; act on routine requests
- Inspect recreational facilities for cleanliness
- Complete and maintain records
- May instruct participants and provide safety precaution information
- May provide assistance with staff selection, training, and supervision
REQUIREMENTS: Must obtain and maintain valid Lifeguard Certification, First Aid training, and CPR/AED training.
