JOB TITLE DEFINITION:
The Farm Operations Worker supports the daily functions of an academic agricultural facility, contributing to farm production, research activities, and student learning experiences; works closely with faculty, researchers, and staff to maintain crops and farm infrastructure while ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable operations.
SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Perform day-to-day farm tasks including planting, cultivating, mowing, irrigating, fertilizing, and harvesting crops
- Operate and maintain farm equipment such as tractors, seeders, irrigation systems, and hand tools
- Prepare fields, barns, and lab spaces for instructional use and student activities
- Monitor crop health and report issues related to pests, disease, or soil conditions
- Maintain farm facilities, fences, storage areas, and equipment to ensure a safe working environment
- Wash barns, trim fence rows, pick up waste, remove fallen trees; remove snow and ice; spread anti-skid material
- Load, unload, transport, weigh, and/or store hay, straw, crops, commodities, and other agriculture and farming materials
- Follow institutional policies and safety procedures, including proper handling of chemicals and equipment
- Assist with sustainability initiatives such as composting, soil conservation, and water management practices
- Provide support during campus events, tours, and educational demonstrations
- May occasionally assist with livestock care, including feeding, monitoring health, cleaning enclosures, and maintaining records
- May control pests using various acceptable methods
REQUIREMENTS: May require a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator's License.
