JOB TITLE DEFINITION: 

The Student Health Services Nurse (RN) performs assessments, examinations and treatments; provides accurate patient education, appropriate ordering and reporting of test results, and proper use of consultations; serves as a resource for internal and external customers, providing sound interpretation and application of professional standards of practice; adheres to policies, procedures, and protocols; establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with patients, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to achieve desired outcomes; works independently, providing care and education per standing orders and/or protocol. The Student Health Services Nurse is responsible to the designated supervisor of assigned department for maintaining acceptable standards of nursing care and providing guidance to nursing services personnel and other patient care personnel.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing (Associate’s Degree in Nursing); current Pennsylvania licensure, in good standing, as Registered Nurse with four years of related nursing experience that is applicable to the assigned work area.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

  • Provide health services to patients in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Obtain health information from patients via telephone or in-person   
  • Assess patient condition and plan care based on that assessment and current nurse protocols 
  • Provide self-care advice based on assessment; refer patient to a clinician and make an appointment, as needed; instruct patient to seek urgent care or to call 911 in emergency situations 
  • Provide students with preventive health information; provide health and wellness education and outreach
  • Coordinate health and wellness events such as blood drives and flu clinics
  • Consult with a physician for medication orders and for any patient care orders outside of established nurse protocols
  • Contact patients to discuss pertinent clinical information such as abnormal lab results, test results, and immunization results; review results and recommendations with patients as necessary
  • Serve as a patient advocate by attending to patient concerns, assessing situations, reporting concerns to supervisory personnel, and instituting/recommending appropriate action 
  • Assist with immunization compliance and student health insurance
  • Maintain documentation and records; perform peer review of documentation, as required 
  • Assist with the orientation, training, and supervision of new departmental staff, practicum students, student workers, and volunteers 
  • Serve as a professional role model and resource person through demonstration of nursing process and provision of consultation 
  • Assess own professional learning needs in collaboration with designated supervisor and attend in-services and continuing education programs to maintain and improve clinical knowledge and skills
  • Participate in departmental/ staff meetings by sharing concerns, observations, and ideas
  • Assist with the development, review, and revision of nurse protocols, procedures, and clinical documentation 
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement activities, committee work, and special projects when appropriate
  • Practice sound clinical judgment, careful listening, critical thinking, and effective decision making in the performance of duties

SUPERVISION: 

Duties are performed under general direction and the employee exercise independent judgment in the planning and arrangement of work directed toward an established objective. Employee determines action to be taken. Knowledge of established policy, procedure and practice is required.
