JOB TITLE DEFINITION:
Emergency Dispatchers receive emergency and non-emergency calls; monitor alarms and surveillance cameras; dispatch emergency responders such as police, fire, and medical services.
SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Answer emergency and non-emergency calls; assess the nature and urgency of the calls to determine the appropriate response
- Coordinate with and dispatch police, fire, and medical units based on the nature and severity of the situation
- Use computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and radio communications to relay information to field personnel
- Offer clear and precise instructions to callers to ensure safety and effectiveness of emergency response
- Provide guidance on emergency procedures, such as CPR or fire evacuation, when necessary
- Accurately document all call details, actions taken, and dispatch activities; prepare and maintain logs and reports as required
- Communicate updates and critical information to emergency responders and other relevant parties
- Coordinate with other emergency response agencies and departments as needed
- Operate Mobile Command Unit and Centre County 911 Center alternate back-up system, as needed
- Ensure seamless communication and collaboration during joint operations
- Ensure that communication equipment and systems are functioning properly; report any malfunctions or issues to the appropriate personnel
- Notify Office of Physical Plant on building conditions needing attention
- May monitor alarms and surveillance cameras
- May answer Parking Office, Environmental Health and Safety, and University Escort Service calls
- May sign out equipment to University Police and other authorized University personnel; report malfunctions and arrange for repair; log information associated with these actions
- May prepare road condition and weather alert reports; request anti-skid crews as necessary; gather information for University closing and weather delay determinations
