Employee Assistance Program

Health Advocate is a free and voluntary resource that has been provided for benefits-eligible employees, their spouse, dependent children, parents, and parents-in-law. Eligible family members do not have to reside with the employee in order to participate.

Health Advocate offers two valuable services, accessible through one phone number, 866-799-2728:

EAP+Work/Life program - A licensed EAP professional can provide short-term counseling by phone, email, or in person to help you better cope with personal, family and work issues. You and your eligible members will still have up to 5 in-person visits per issue. On the work/life side, specialists can help you locate the right support services, from childcare and eldercare to legal and financial help.

Healthcare Help - You have unlimited access to a highly trained Personal Health Advocate (PHA), who can help you navigate the healthcare and insurance systems, efficiently and dependably. The PHA can help you find the right providers, negotiate fees on uncovered medical bills, locate second opinions, provide cost comparisons for medical procedures and much more.

What is the Employee Assistance Program (EAP)?

Penn State’s EAP is a free, confidential employee and family resource to be used as a first line of defense for personal or work-related concerns for yourself or your family.

Penn State has contracted this program through Health Advocate, a leading EAP provider and the 2011 Global Winner of Workforce Magazine's Optimas Award in the Service category.

How Often Can I Use EAP?

There is no limit to the number of times all benefits-eligible employees, their spouse, dependent children, parents and parents-in-law can use the EAP. All EAP services have been pre-paid by Penn State. There are no fees for calling the EAP or for your face-to-face visits with a local therapist (up to five free face-to-face visits per concern, with no limit to the number of concerns that may need to be address).
