JOB TITLE DEFINITION:
Perform preparatory and setup tasks for laboratory classes and graduate/faculty research projects. Mix solutions, reagents, stains, etc.; dispose of waste; clean laboratories and equipment.
SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Set-up, prepare, and clean-up equipment, supplies, and materials for laboratory courses
- Operate laboratory equipment such as autoclave, electric oven, dishwashers, stills, spectrophotometer, incubators, chromatograph, centrifuge, etc.
- Prepare media, slides, cultures, chemicals, solutions, reagents, etc., following standardized methods and procedures
- Demonstrate the proper use of various laboratory equipment and apparatus
- Assist in the maintenance of equipment and apparatus and occasionally transport to new areas
- Unpack, check, and store incoming materials
- Maintain laboratories in a neat and orderly condition, bench tops, cabinets, and drawers
- Gather hazardous waste and materials from laboratory experiments; follow Safety Office guidelines regarding hazardous material handling, storage, and disposal; fill out appropriate forms
- Maintain inventory of materials, supplies, chemicals, and equipment; perform physical inventory count as required; provide logs and tallies to supervisor
- Perform site and safety checks on assigned building areas, following prescribed procedures
- Report issues to supervisor or appropriate personnel and initiate corrective action, as directed
- May move, remove, and replace compressed gas tanks/cylinders using the proper safety precautions and following established procedures
- May assist faculty and students in the care of live animals and maintenance of records; maintain compliance with policies and procedures regarding live-animal care
