Diversity Workout: How Stereotypes Affect Social Influence Strategies and Race and Ethnicity, Not Race or Ethnicity

This session will cover 2 different but related diversity topics:

Session 1: How Stereotypes Affect Social Influence Strategies – 45 minutes
Social Influence Strategies refers to techniques used to change someone’s ideas and actions to meet your demands. Individuals in formal or informal power positions, and others with influence, are well positioned to utilize social influence strategies. Stereotypes can subconsciously play a large role in the social influence strategies used. This session takes a granular approach and explores how stereotypes contribute to stereotype-based roles and activities often visible within U.S. colleges and universities.

Session 2: Race and Ethnicity, Not Race or Ethnicity– 45 minutes
The average person frequently uses the terms “race” and “ethnicity” interchangeably as synonyms to categorize humans. While race is ascribed to individuals on the basis of physical traits, ethnicity encompasses everything from language, to nationality, culture and religion. Ethnicity can enable people to take on several identities. This session considers how perceptions of race and ethnicity misidentifies members in our University community and how it affects their lived experiences and identity formation.

Strengths Discovery -- Individual Clifton Strengths

This course will introduce participants to their natural areas of talent so they can grow their talents into strengths, use them to do their work, and offer maximum value to their teams, partnerships, and relationships. Each participant will complete Gallup’s CliftonStrengths (StrengthsFinder) assessment ahead of time and receive custom reports to understand their talents better.

This session provides basic guidelines for understanding and preventing sexual and gender-based harassment in the workplace. Records Management at Penn State: Getting Your Files Organized the Easy Way

Are you unsure of which department records to keep, and for how long? Are hard drives and shared network drives filled with files created years ago? Have you been tasked with managing documents for your department but feel uncertain where to begin? This course will provide an overview of Penn State’s Office of Records Management, beginning with Policy AD35 which specifies how University Records are defined, filed, utilized, securely destroyed, and archived. This course will provide training on how to follow retention schedules for your department’s records, to ensure that active records are appropriately managed and that inactive records are properly disposed of. Useful information will also be provided on the Inactive Records Center, a secure storage solution for University Records which provides transfer, retrieval, and destruction services. Finally, this program offers tips and solutions for organizing records while working remotely, so that overall management of your department’s records is efficient and easy.

Diversity Workout: Cultural Compentence vs. Culture Agility and Microagressions: From Confusion to Clarity

This session will cover 2 different but related diversity topics:

Session 1: Cultural Competence vs. Cultural Agility – 45 minutes
This session helps to increase self-awareness of your cultural competences and cultural agility. Three components of cultural competence are identified as well as the main barrier that is constant. Cultural agility is introduced as the mega-competency which is really what enables professionals to perform successfully in cross-cultural situations.

Session 2: Microaggressions: From Confusion to Clarity – 45 minutes

Diversity education throughout U.S. colleges and universities commonly include unpacking “microaggressions.” If the concept of a microaggression is not difficult to understand, then why are microaggressions frequently communicated and seem nearly impossible to prevent? This session clarifies some confusion associated with the concept of microaggressions in hopes of improving overall understanding and communication between members of the Penn State community.
