JOB TITLE DEFINITION:  

Athletic/Recreation Services Specialist positions provide support, coordination, facilitation, and/or leadership for athletic and recreational activities and facilities; deliver instruction for fitness classes and wellness courses; provide routine safety and first aid services; assist with sideline game operation activities; ensure standards of play at sporting events. Note: positions such as ushers, ticket operations, parking attendants guest relations, and physical event set-up should not be classified within this title. 

SAMPLE WORK ACTIVITIES:  

  • Support and/or manage the daily operations of athletic/recreational facilities and/or activities 
  • Enforce rules and regulations of athletic/recreational facilities and/or activities  
  • Monitor areas such as fitness centers, climbing walls, and swimming areas 
  • Track facility and equipment usage; document and report maintenance problems, unusual conditions, and damages to the supervisor
  • Adhere to safe and appropriate use of all equipment and modalities within established guidelines
  • Administer routine first aid to recreational participants according to prescribed procedures and notify emergency medical personnel when necessary 
  • Assess the needs and interests of individuals and groups and plan activities accordingly, given the available equipment or facilities 
  • Provide facilitation, leadership, and assessment for recreational activities, intramural sports, private lessons, wellness courses, and clinics 
  • May instruct fitness classes or conduct personal training sessions; plan routines, exercises, and movements; evaluate individuals’ abilities, offer skill improvement recommendations; monitor and assess participant progress 
  • May officiate sporting events, games, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and to ensure that game rules are observed and points are correctly awarded 
  • May rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment 
  • May provide game day operations to sports teams such as clocking, hydration, team statistics compilation, and score keeping/scoreboard operation 
  • May participate in the recruitment and retention of student athletes and activity participants
